What Is Bad Times AI? The Trend Explained

What the Bad Times trend is, how people play it, and how an AI version differs from a filter or a face swap.

Bad Times is a lip-sync bit. One person faces the camera and acts out a fight with it: pointing a finger, throwing up a hand, then leaning in close to the lens as if to make a final point. "Bad Times AI" is the version where an AI video model makes that bit with someone's photo.

Our Short: the pretend fight with the camera, made from one photo of an AI-generated woman.

Where it came from

We can't point to a single first post. The bit is tied to one song, and the clips that spread on short-video apps all share the same beats. What we can see is the search side: searches for "Bad Times AI" picked up in late September 2026 and held steady into October. That's our read of public search data, not a claim about who started it.

How people play it

  • Alone, to the camera, with big faces and bigger gestures.
  • With a pet standing in for the person.

The appeal is that it takes no skill. You need one person, a phone and a straight face.

Bad Times AI, a filter and a face swap

These are three different things.

  • A filter changes a video you filmed. You still have to do the bit yourself.
  • A face swap puts a face into someone else's footage. We don't offer that.
  • Bad Times AI makes a new clip. You give one photo, and an AI video model animates the person in it through the staging and timing of the bit. You don't film anything.

The trade-off is control. You don't choose the gestures, and the lips follow the performance but won't match every word.

Make one

Put Me In makes a Bad Times AI video from one photo of you or your pet: 15 seconds, 9:16 vertical, with the template's music, labelled AI generated.

Put Me In is an independent tool. We have no connection with the people or the song in the original Bad Times videos.
